Welcome, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Matthew Maruska!

Please join me in extending a warm welcome and congratulations to Dr. Matthew C. Maruska, DO, on joining Tarleton State University. Dr. Maruska has accepted the role of Chief Medical Officer within the Division of Student Engagement and Success.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) manages the direction of student health and wellness activities, including student-athletes. Coordinates with administrative management to implement strategies for delivering services to patients. Provides leadership and participates in strategic projects and initiatives to achieve goals and objectives in managing the delivery system, and engages in problem solving, and long-range planning.

The CMO is responsible for the delivery of high-standard, cost-effective medical care in a manner that incorporates Tarleton’s values of excellence, integrity, and respect. Additional responsibilities include planning and directing the functioning of the campus Health Center, maintaining a fiscally responsible budget, creating a referral network for medical and surgical specialists, and acting as the medical supervisor for allied health professional degree programs on campus. The Chief Medical Officer acts as the liaison between the medical staff and administrators. This position will also serve as the Head Team Physician for Tarleton State Athletics as approved by the Vice President for Student Engagement and Success, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, and President of Tarleton State University.

Dr. Matthew C. Maruska, DO, is a highly regarded primary care sports medicine specialist in Stephenville, Texas. He was previously affiliated with Cross Timbers Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for the past ten years. Dr. Maruska looks forward to focusing on student care and wellness in his new role as Chief Medical Officer at Tarleton State University.

Dr. Maruska graduated with honors from Texas A&M University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences. He was an active Texas A&M Rodeo team member from 1996-1999. Following graduation, Dr. Maruska dedicated himself to serving the community as a public school teacher and coach within Lubbock Independent School District. His passion for education and commitment to helping others led him to further pursue his studies. In 2010, Dr. Maruska earned his medical degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, an affiliate of the UNT Health Sciences Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Maruska completed his family medicine residency in Waco, TX, in 2013. He then went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa in San Antonio, TX, in 2014. Dr. Maruska is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has extensive experience as a team physician for multiple colleges and high schools.

Dr. Matthew Maruska has been married to his wife, Kendi, for twenty-five years. Together, they have raised three wonderful children. Their oldest son, Tate, has recently secured a football scholarship and is all set to embark on his academic journey at Tarleton State University this fall.
