Tarleton State University, Stephenville and Erath County leaders are at the Capitol in Austin, advocating as one voice for critical community support. It is Cowboy Capital of the World Day.
The executive delegation — Tarleton President James Hurley, Mayor Doug Svien, Judge Brandon Huckabee and Stephenville ISD Superintendent Eric Cederstrom — will meet this afternoon with state legislators and their staffs to discuss infrastructure, economic development, and healthcare and educational needs.
“It is an honor to share our day in Austin with Stephenville’s municipal, county and school district leaders. The voice of ‘we’ brings a powerful message,” Dr Hurley said. “We re fortunte to have legislators who hear this message, that a transformative education means a superior quality of life.”
Tarleton’s five interns serving at the 88th Texas Legislature can testify. In addition to helping organize today’s visit, they’re learning firsthand how government processes impact a community’s big picture.
With Tarleton’s exponential growth, support is needed to meet the demands of communities that surround it, including utility improvements, adequate rental and single-family housing, and broadband access.
Dr. Hurley: “Universities in college towns can sometimes get hypnotized by their own reflection in the mirror. But not this university, and not this town. We have a moral and social obligation to embrace our neighbors and partner with the community. It takes all of us working together to create this special place we call home.”
As part of Cowboy Capital of the World Day, Sen. Brian Birdwell (Dist. 22) and Rep. Shelby Slawson (Dist. 59) have sponsored resolutions honoring today’s delegation and recognizing Tarleton, Stephenville, Erath County and the Stephenville ISD for their myriad contributions to the Lone Star State. The resolutions will be read from the House and Senate floors.
